Somewhere along the way, you were taught that your ancestors are gone. Finished. Absent. That the most you can do is remember them fondly and let them go. My friend, that is not the truth our people carried. Across Africa and the whole diaspora that came from her, the ancestors are not dead in that Western sense. They transitioned. They are present, they are near, and they are invested in your life. The line to them was never cut. It only went quiet, waiting for someone to answer.

And here is the part almost no one teaches: this is a relationship, and a relationship runs both ways. There is speaking, and there is listening. You have a voice they long to hear, and they have been answering you your whole life, in ways you were taught to dismiss.
And you, in your very body, were built for this. Your melanin is not only the color of your skin. It is an instrument, a receiver of the subtle, a keeper of ancestral memory. So when you feel them near, you are not making it up. You are picking it up.
So here are the strategies, the real, time-tested ways our people have always worked this two-way line. First, how to speak to them. Then, how to hear them answer.
How to Speak to Them
A relationship begins the moment you open your mouth. This is how our people have always reached back.
Speak to them directly. Talk to them out loud, in plain words, the way you would talk to a living elder sitting across the table. Tell them your troubles. Ask their advice. Thank them for what they carried so you could be here. Introduce them to your children. Say good morning. The whole thing begins with a conversation.
Keep an ancestral altar. A dedicated place in your home: a photograph or two, their names written down, a small memento, a candle, a glass of clean water. It is not decoration. It is a doorway, a place where the relationship has an address and you can meet them every day.
Make offerings and pour libation. All across Africa and the diaspora, the connection is fed. A little water, a portion of the meal, a libation poured onto the ground while you call the names aloud. It says: you are remembered, you are welcome here, come and sit with us. It keeps the line warm.
Meet them in dreams, on purpose. Before you sleep, hold the intention. Say, quietly, tonight I am open to you, come and meet me. Keep something to write with by the bed, and honor whatever comes. You are making an appointment at the threshold, and often, they keep it.
Make stillness. Their signal is subtle, and it cannot land in a life that is all noise. Building regular quiet, the pre-dawn dark especially, before the world wakes and files its claims on you, is itself a way of reaching toward them. You are clearing the line.
Tend it faithfully. This is the strategy beneath all the others, so hear it well: this is a relationship, not a transaction. It is not a vending machine where you put in a prayer and pull out a sign. It is kept warm by regular remembrance, and it deepens the more devotedly you tend it. You do not summon your ancestors. You keep the relationship, and the relationship keeps you.
How to Hear From Them
But a relationship is not only talking. And here is the good news: hearing your ancestors is a skill you cultivate, not a gift you sit and wait for. They are already reaching you, and they do it through five ordinary doorways.
The stillness. A quiet knowing that arrives unbidden. Not a thought you reached for and worked out, but one that simply arrived, whole, with a calm certainty to it. This is the most common doorway of all, which is exactly why getting quiet matters so much. A whisper cannot be heard over noise.
Your dreams. Named again and again, in every tradition, as the meeting place. The vivid dream. The emotionally charged one. The grandmother who feels so real that you wake up sure you were with her, or the unfamiliar face that still somehow feels like blood. Keep a journal by the bed, because the dream fades fast, and the hand remembers what the eyes forget.
Signs and synchronicities. The ancestors speaking in the language of the ordinary world. Repeated numbers. A song that keeps following you. A scent that has no business being in the room. A creature that arrives and holds your gaze. A coincidence too precise to be one. The ancestors rarely shout, my friend. They whisper. And the whole discipline of hearing is to notice, instead of explaining it away.
The body. Before the mind understands, the body already knows. The chill up the arms. A sudden warmth. A pressure on the chest. The turn in the gut that says no when everything on paper says yes. The felt sense that someone has just entered the room. The body is the first receiver. Learn to trust it, and stop talking yourself out of it.
The trained intuitive. Sometimes you want a go-between, someone whose gift is tuned to read what you cannot yet read for yourself. Our people have always had them, from the diviner with the cowrie shells to the trusted reader today. There is no shame in it. Even the most gifted among us sometimes needs another set of ears.
And then, the strategy that turns all of this into a true conversation: ask, and then listen. Do not only wait passively for a sign. Pose a real question, out loud, to a particular ancestor. And then, for the next few days, watch. Watch the stillness for a knowing. Watch your dreams. Watch the signs. Watch your own body. Because you asked, and now you are listening for the answer to come back, through whichever door they choose. That is not a monologue at a wall. That is a conversation.
A Word of Care

Before you begin, one discipline that keeps this safe and steady. Open the door to benevolent presence only, and weigh everything you receive against the truth. Real ancestral guidance will steady you and call you toward your highest life. It counsels; it never commands, and it never overrides your own knowing. And be patient, my friend. This is a relationship, and relationships take time. Do not sit down one quiet morning, hear nothing, and decide the line is dead. It is not dead. It is warming up. Keep showing up, keep speaking, keep listening, and little by little the quiet will fill with their presence.
Come and Begin the Conversation
You were never cut off from your people. The line is open, it runs both ways, and they are waiting for you to pick up. Speak to them. And then listen.
