Original Chakras: Your Body Gives Its Own Light
Updated: 4 days ago
The Book of the Dead Chapter 83 places the source of light inside the body. In the translation by Peter Le Page Renouf and Édouard Naville (1904), the speaker claims the title “Horus who giveth light by means of his own body.” Heru is the Ancient Egyptian name behind the Greek name Horus. The same chapter places the speaker among seven Uraeus deities, serpent powers of Amenta, the hidden land of the west. I read the Book of the Dead as instruction for the living. Nowhere does Chapter 83 put a temple, a teacher, or a purchase between you and your light.
The Chart in the Wellness Aisle Is Young
The seven-circle chart that studios and shops sell today is far younger than its marketing suggests. Most of it rests on a Sanskrit text from the sixteenth century. An English translation of that text reached Western readers in the early twentieth century. Western writers added the rainbow colors after that. None of the shop pages that print this chart mention Ancient Egypt, Nubia, or any African source. Many Black people pay full price for that chart, its classes, and its certifications. Each purchase teaches the buyer to look outside their own ancestry for spiritual authority.
Energy healing started where people began: in Africa. Modern humans lived on that continent long before anyone wrote a word of Sanskrit. Every human population on earth descends from African ancestors who carried their cosmology with them as they settled the world. India’s teachers built a serious practice that deserves respect. Yet, much of this work doesn't tell you who first understood the force underneath it.
Seven Powers Along the Tree: Original Chakras
Ancient Egypt mapped seven powers along one line in the body. The djed means stability and stands for the backbone of Asar, the god the Greeks called Osiris. In a living person, that backbone is the spine. In alignment with Muata Ashby (2007), I call it the Tree—the line that runs from the base of the spine to the crown. Ashby traces that seven-part map through the sacred texts of Ancient Egypt. He reads seven levels on the central shaft of the scale in the Papyrus of Kenna as the seven powers of the body. Chapter 83 in the Book of the Dead names the same number in its seven Uraeus deities.
That scale ties the map to the way a person lives. Ma’at names the cosmos and the divine intelligence in all things, the balance between isfet, the force of chaos, and truth and justice. In the judgment scene, the heart rests on the scale opposite the feather of Ma’at. Ammit, the devourer beside the scale, marks the line between the lower three levels and the upper four. Ancient Egypt pictured the force that climbs the tree as the uraeus, the rearing cobra its rulers wore at the brow. That rising force is Arat Sekhem, the serpent power. Force rises only as far as the column allows, which makes clearing the column the first work.
Sekhem, an ancient African word for power and life force, names the energy that travels the channels of the body. Ancient Egypt moved that force with hekau, words of power a person speaks on the breath. Its practitioners set carnelian and lapis lazuli into sacred objects. Amulets like the djed and the Eye of Heru held protection and wholeness in a form a person could wear. Every stone has a no-cost substitute today. Your breath and your attention are the only tools the practice truly needs.
Where Pressure Stops the Force
Black people in America carry pressures that stop force at specific places in the body. Survival economics keep the base of the spine in alarm when rent, food, and wages never let the emergency end. A person absorbs the room, the feed, and the news all day with no filter. Systems teach powerlessness so early that many Black children stop reaching before anyone tells them no. Grief with nowhere to go closes the chest. Other people police the voice, overrule what the eye sees, and rank Ancient African spirituality as superstition. Each of those pressures lands in the body and stays there.
I spent nearly three decades in public health research and academia studying what racism does inside the body. Arline Geronimus, a public health researcher, calls the result weathering. Her work tracks how the stress of racism wears down Black bodies earlier in life. Energy healing reads that same damage as force that stopped moving. None of it began as a personal failure, since a body that closes the chest or quiets the voice under threat does what survival requires. Those closures kept many Black people alive. They now hold force in place long after the threat changed shape.
The Force Still Belongs to You
Melanin Metaphysics reads the light of the Book of the Dead in the melanated body itself. Eumelanin, the darkest form of melanin, absorbs light across the visible spectrum. That property makes the melanated body an instrument that receives light. A person who clears the column doesn’t borrow power from a teacher, a studio, or a certification. Moving force changes an ordinary day since your decisions start coming from your own center instead of the next emergency. Your force belonged to you before anyone trained you to hold it down.
Families pass down untreated stress, silence, and survival habits along with property. Clearing the column changes what you hand to your children. This work is spiritual practice and ancestral science. It doesn’t replace medical care, mental health care, or your own doctor. If you’re under a doctor’s care, keep that care and add this practice beside it.
Start with one question: Who taught your body where to stop its own light? Whatever your answer names shows you where your work begins.
