They Took Your Name. Take It Back

This week, we went after the oldest weapon ever used against us. And no, it was not the whip.

It was the name. Because before they ever chained a body, they learned something. Take a people’s names, their language, their gods, and the words in their own mouths, and you can take the people themselves. Erase the name, and you erase the person. That is not ancient history, my friend. That is a wound we still carry. So this week we stepped through the second great gate, the Gate of Ba, the Flight, and we reclaimed the fourth body of light, the Ren, your true name. We recognized the corrupted self that will sell its name for a seat. We learned that the word makes the thing. And we learned to speak our own lives back into being. This week, we took the name back.

Take Back Your Name in Three Movements

Tuesday, the Commentary. “Who Told You It Was a Doghouse?” We began with something hard, because the Gate of Ba begins with Recognize, and you cannot release what you will not first look at. A Black commentator, in his own public words, on a platform that reaches millions, stood up and erased Dr. Martin Luther King, and called the whole world our ancestors built a “doghouse.” We named it for exactly what it is. Not a political opinion. A corrupted identity. A Ba cut from its Kem root, a self that traded its own true name for a seat at the main house, and now sings for the people who took it. Then we handed his little analogy the history that ends it.

Our people did build their own house. It was called Black Wall Street, in Tulsa. It was Rosewood, in Florida. And white mobs burned them to the ground and murdered the people inside. Nobody abandoned the backyard. The backyard was set on fire. And then, gently, we turned the mirror. Because that loud corruption on the screen is the same quiet pull the rest of us feel every time we shrink to be palatable, edit our own truth for a check, or laugh at the joke that costs us our dignity. Seeing that clearly, in him and in ourselves, that is the Gate of Ba, opening.

Wednesday, the Teaching. “Ren & Nommo: The Word That Makes the Thing.” Then we went down beneath the politics, into the name itself. In the wisdom of the Nile Valley, your Ren is your true and eternal name, the name of your very soul. And to erase a person’s name was believed to erase the person, their whole existence, forever. Now you understand why they came for ours first.

Then we picked up the other half of the teaching, Nommo, the sacred power the Dogon of Mali carry, the force of the spoken word that calls a thing into being. The word makes the thing. Not as a pretty saying. As law. Bound to Ma’at, bound to truth, the spoken word becomes creation itself. And here is what landed on everybody at once. You have been speaking your world into being your entire life, out loud and under your breath, whether you knew it or not. This week, you found out you have been holding the wand the whole time.

Thursday, the Practice. “Speak It Into Being.” And then we took it out of the head and into the mouth, into the life, because a truth you only understand is not yet a truth you have lived. First, the discipline of the word. Guarding the two most powerful words you own, “I am,” because whatever you hang after those two words, you are commanding into being. Catching the automatic curses we throw around without thinking, “I’m broke,” “I’m exhausted,” “this always happens to me,” and hearing them for the prophecies they really are. Learning to speak life over our bodies, our children, our money, and our future. Not denial. Declaration.

Then we turned to the most sacred word of all, your own name. And I taught it the way our ancestors knew it. Your true name is not something you invent. It is something you remember. It is an ancestral memory, already carried in your blood, in your Ka, in your melanin. Your ancestors already know your name. And I shared the ways you begin to get quiet, and listen, and call it home.
